What to wear with wide-leg trousers
The coats, knits, tops and shoes that work with a wide leg in autumn, and the proportions that make it look intentional.
Wide-leg trousers are easy to wear once the proportions are right. The general rule is simple: if the trousers are full, keep the top half closer to the body, or at least show where your waist is.
Tops: tuck, crop or fit
A fine knit or a fitted long-sleeved top tucked into a high waist is the cleanest look. A poplin shirt works tucked at the front, or fully tucked with the sleeves rolled. Save longer, looser knits for straight-leg jeans, where the extra volume is not doubled.
Coats and jackets
Long coats work well with wide-leg trousers because they continue the long line. A wool wrap coat or a trench that falls below the knee looks deliberate, especially in a colour close to the trousers. Shorter jackets should stop at the waist or hip, such as an unlined blazer or a chore jacket, rather than halfway down the thigh.
Knitwear in autumn
A merino roll-neck is the easiest autumn top for pleated trousers. A chunkier cable knit can work too, as long as it is tucked at the front or finishes at the hip, so the waist does not disappear.
Shoes
Loafers and ballet flats suit a hem that just skims the top of the foot. A Chelsea boot sits neatly under a wide leg and disappears into the hem. If you wear a heel, choose a block heel and a longer length so the hem covers most of the shoe. Our length guide explains how to measure your inside leg.
Fabric changes the mood
- Lyocell and linen blends drape fluidly and look smart with a blouse.
- Washed linen is relaxed; pair it with knits in early autumn.
- Jumbo cord is the warmest and most casual, with boots and a cable knit.
