Packing for a weekend on the Northumberland coast

One small bag, two days of sea wind and sunshine, and clothes that all work together.

A woman in a butter yellow smocked linen sundress standing in the marram grass of the dunes on a bright day.

The Northumberland coast can give you four seasons before lunch. Pack for layers rather than for the forecast, and make sure everything in the bag goes with everything else.

The capsule

  • A dress you can wear two ways: open over a vest by day, belted under a knit at night.
  • One knit that goes over everything.
  • Shoes you can walk on sand in, and a pair you’d wear to dinner.
  • A crossbody bag, so your hands are free for the dog, the chips or the camera.

Day one: the beach

Castles, dunes and a long walk to the harbour. A linen dress, bare legs if the sun’s out, and a cardigan tied over your shoulders for when it isn’t.

Day two: the village

The same dress in a different mood. Add the knit, swap to loafers, and it’s ready for a long pub lunch.

What to leave at home

Anything that needs ironing, and anything you’d worry about getting sandy.
